The city’s anti-mendicancy drive netted last Tuesday evening 52 persons, all transients who were transported back to where they were earlier based.

Social Welfare Officer III Liza Balao said the round-up was done by the city’s task force on anti-mendicancy, an inter-agency group composed of government and private sector representatives, including the Commission on Human Rights, police, Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center, and bus companies plying the route to and from the city.

Balao said the mendicants were from 12 families belonging to two separate groups who recently came up from Dagupan and Angeles cities. They were rounded up at the Burnham Park Athletic Bowl and behind the Baguio Convention Center where they planned to spend the night.

The task force firmed up the round-up during a meeting with Mayor Mauricio Domogan last Monday following the proliferation of beggars, especially women originally from Mindanao who cuddled infants to convince passers-by to hand over alms.
